Majority of Americans say bottled water is among their most preferred beverages

PKBR Staff Writer Published 20 December 2017

A new survey has revealed that majority of US consumers prefer bottled water, recognize it as a healthy choice, and think it must be available wherever drinks are sold.

Harris Poll carried out the survey of over 3,000 US adults aged 18 and older on behalf of the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA).

According to the survey, more than 3 in 5 Americans (63%) say bottled water (still and/or sparkling) is among their most preferred beverages, followed by coffee (62%).

Of the survey respondents, 94% think that bottled water is a healthier choice when compared to soft drinks, and 93% said bottled water should be available wherever drinks are sold.

The survey also found that among consumers who have ever purchased bottled water, those who identify bottled water as their most preferred beverages are more likely than those who see soda as one of their most preferred beverages for recycling their water containers.

Several key factors have been identified by bottled water drinkers when selecting a beverage, but taste, quality, and safety are at the top of their list.

Features such as ready to enjoy (82%), convenient packaging when on the go (80%), and re-sealable packaging (74%) play a key role for bottled water drinkers when choosing a beverage.

IBWA vice president of communications Jill Culora said: “This poll is consistent with consumption figures released earlier this year that show, for the first time in history, bottled water is the No.1 packaged beverage in the United States (by volume).

“People are shifting away from less healthy packaged drinks and choosing the healthy option – bottled water.”

IBWA is the authoritative source of information about all types of bottled waters, including spring, mineral, purified, artesian, and sparkling.

The association is committed to work with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates bottled water as a packaged food product, to set stringent standards for safe bottled water products.
