Sidel, Coca-Cola partner on new design for Fanta bottle

PKBR Staff Writer Published 07 December 2017

Sidel has partnered with The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) to design and develop a new Fanta packaging shape, applicable to both PET and glass bottles.

As part of the ‘spiral’ PET bottle project, the companies seek to provide a protectable new global standard for the Fanta brand.

Designed by Drink Works, the new 100% recyclable PET bottle for Fanta brand features a spiral and is based on a series of ribs decorated with small bubbles and a torsion in the bottom half, thus giving the bottle an unusual, asymmetric structure, Sidel said.

Sidel packaging expert Jérome Neveu said: “It is definitively critical that all opposing sides of the bottle have the same developed length to avoid issues with perpendicularity.

“We optimized the grip profile and the angular base orientation to retain the bottle geometry once filled.”

Sidel said that the new Spiral bottle required full design testing and refinement and has undergone Finite Element Analysis to assess performance using computing analysis.

The final design has also been tested to ensure the vertical growth under pressure is controlled and to assess if the container meets all quality and performance requirements of Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola Packaging Engineer global project coordination in charge Gregory Bentley said: “The physical strength of the new bottle is as good as the previous Fanta Splash bottle. Other line stability tests were also conducted by Sidel, achieving suitable results for high speed filling.”

Sidel said that a similar shape has also been developed for the entire Fanta bottle family and it is currently available for 500ml, 1l, 1.5l and 2l formats.

The new Spiral Fanta PET bottle, which is already made available in Italy, Poland, Malta, Serbia, Finland, Romania and the UK, is planned for global roll-out in near future.
